Weeki Wachee Springs State Park has been drawing visitors since the 1940s with its legendary underwater mermaid shows — live performers who breathe through air hoses while dancing and flipping in the crystal-clear spring water. When Florida acquired the site as a state park in 2008, it preserved one of the state’s most singular attractions alongside 538 acres of natural spring habitat.

The star here is the spring itself: a first-magnitude spring pumping 117 million gallons of fresh water daily at a constant 74°F. The mermaid theater, built into the limestone beside the spring head, seats 400 people behind thick glass windows for shows that run multiple times daily. Beyond the theater, Buccaneer Bay is a spring-fed water park included with admission — one of the only water parks in the country fed entirely by a natural spring.

Paddling the Weeki Wachee River is the other must-do. The 5-mile kayak trail downstream passes through a pristine corridor where manatees, turtles, and wading birds are common, especially in cooler months. Boat tours of the river are also available for those who prefer to sit back.

Visit between late September and April to avoid the heaviest crowds and catch manatee season. Summer weekends fill to capacity early — arriving by 9 AM is essential. The park does not offer camping on-site, though nearby Chassahowitzka and Withlacoochee state forests provide options.
