Salt Springs State Park

Tucked into the rolling hills of Susquehanna County, Salt Springs State Park preserves 405 acres of old-growth hemlock forest — one of the few remaining stands in northeastern Pennsylvania. Established in 1973, the park takes its name from the natural salt springs that once drew Native Americans and early settlers to the area, and you can still find mineral deposits along Fall Brook as it cuts through a dramatic gorge lined with moss-covered rock walls.

The real highlight here is the three-tiered waterfall along Fall Brook, easily accessible via a moderate loop trail that descends into the hemlock-shaded gorge. The canopy keeps temperatures noticeably cooler in summer, making it a welcome escape during July and August. Beyond the falls trail, several miles of interconnected paths wind through forests and meadows — good for hiking, birding, and cross-country skiing once the snow sets in. The old-growth hemlocks, some over 500 years old, give the gorge a cathedral-like quiet you won’t find in most Pennsylvania state parks.

Picnic pavilions and open areas near the parking lot make for easy day-trip setups with families. The park’s relatively small size means you can explore most of it in a half day, but the gorge rewards a slower pace.

Late spring brings wildflowers carpeting the forest floor, while fall foliage in October is outstanding against the evergreen hemlocks. Winter visits offer frozen waterfall views and genuine solitude. This is a park that punches well above its acreage.
