Versailles State Park

Tucked into the rolling hills of Ripley County in southeastern Indiana, Versailles State Park spans nearly 6,000 acres of rugged, wooded terrain — making it one of the largest state parks in Indiana. Established in 1943, much of the park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s, and their handiwork remains visible in the stone shelters, dam, and historic structures scattered throughout the grounds.

The park’s centerpiece is Versailles Lake, a 230-acre reservoir popular for fishing bass, bluegill, and channel catfish. A boat ramp provides easy access, though motors are limited to electric only, keeping the water calm and the atmosphere peaceful. Surrounding the lake, miles of hiking and mountain biking trails wind through dense hardwood forests and across creek-carved ravines. The Fallen Timber Trail offers a moderately challenging loop with rewarding ridge-top views, while the paved trails near the lake suit families with younger kids.

Seasonal highlights make timing your visit worthwhile. Spring brings wildflower displays along the forest floor, and fall transforms the hardwood canopy into a spectacular show of color — typically peaking in mid-October. Summer weekends draw steady crowds, so weekday visits offer more solitude.

The park sits in Johnson Township, just outside the small town of Versailles, where you’ll find basic supplies and a handful of local restaurants. It’s a roughly 90-minute drive from both Indianapolis and Cincinnati, making it an accessible weekend escape without the heavy traffic of parks closer to either city.
