Smallwood State Park
Maryland (Charles County)
Tucked along the banks of the Potomac River in Charles County, Maryland, Smallwood State Park spreads across 984 acres of forested Tidewater landscape steeped in Revolutionary War history. The park is named for General William Smallwood, Maryland’s fourth governor and a commander who led troops at the Battle of Long Island. His restored 18th-century plantation home sits on the grounds and is open for tours, making this one of the few Maryland state parks where history and nature share equal billing.
The marina at Mattawoman Creek is the park’s centerpiece, offering boat launches, slips, and access to some of the best largemouth bass fishing on the Potomac. Anglers come year-round, but spring and fall produce the most consistent catches. Kayakers and canoeists will find the sheltered creek waters ideal for a quiet paddle through marshland teeming with great blue herons, ospreys, and bald eagles.
On land, a network of hiking trails winds through hardwood forest and past wetlands, with the Sweden Point Marina Trail offering easy waterfront views. Picnic pavilions, a playground, and open fields make it a solid choice for families. The park operates a seasonal campground with both tent and RV sites, though availability varies — check ahead during summer weekends.
Late spring through early fall is prime time for water activities, while autumn brings spectacular foliage along the river bluffs. Winter visitors will find quieter trails and surprisingly good birding. Smallwood rewards those who come looking for a slower pace and a longer story.
