Tucked beneath the Woodrow Wilson Bridge in Alexandria, Virginia, Jones Point Light (1856) is one of the few surviving inland lighthouses on the Potomac River. This modest tower guided river traffic for over a century before being deactivated. It also marks the original southern cornerstone of the District of Columbia, making it a unique intersection of maritime and political history.
The lighthouse is not open to the public for climbing, but visitors can view it up close within Jones Point Park. Golden hour before sunset offers the best photography, with the bridge framing dramatic backlight. Nearby, explore Old Town Alexandria’s waterfront, the Torpedo Factory Art Center, and the Mount Vernon Trail for cycling and walking.
