Shikellamy State Park
Pennsylvania (Northumberland and Union Counties County)
Perched on a dramatic bluff above the confluence of the West Branch and North Branch of the Susquehanna River, Shikellamy State Park offers one of central Pennsylvania’s most striking overlooks. At just 132 acres, this compact park in Northumberland and Union Counties packs an outsized visual punch — the panoramic view from the hilltop pavilion stretches across the river valley and the rooftops of Sunbury below.
Established in 1960, the park is divided between two distinct areas. The hilltop section centers on the famous overlook, with picnic areas, a seasonal food concession, and short walking paths along the ridgeline. Below, the marina area sits directly on the river, providing boat launches, mooring slips, and access to some of the Susquehanna’s best warm-water fishing. Anglers target smallmouth bass, walleye, and channel catfish in the waters near the confluence.
The park’s trails are modest in length but reward hikers with constant river views and mature hardwood forest. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars — the overlook is a productive spot for watching raptors ride thermals above the valley, particularly during fall migration.
Shikellamy does not offer on-site camping, but nearby state forests and private campgrounds serve visitors looking to stay overnight. The park is ideal as a day trip or a stop along a longer Susquehanna River road trip.
Visit in autumn for peak foliage views from the overlook, or in late spring when the river runs full and the surrounding hills are freshly green.
