Riverbank State Park
New York (New York City County)
Perched 69 feet above the Hudson River on a rooftop in West Harlem, Riverbank State Park is unlike anything else in the New York state park system. Built atop the North River Wastewater Treatment Plant, this 28-acre urban oasis opened in 1993 and has since become one of upper Manhattan’s most beloved recreational spaces, serving the surrounding community with facilities that rival parks many times its size.
The park packs an impressive amount into its compact footprint. A 25-meter indoor Olympic pool and a separate wading pool draw swimmers year-round, while an outdoor amphitheater hosts concerts and cultural events throughout the warmer months. Basketball courts, a skating rink that converts between ice and roller depending on the season, a fully equipped fitness room, and a 400-meter running track give visitors no shortage of ways to stay active. The riverside setting offers sweeping views of the George Washington Bridge and the New Jersey Palisades that feel worlds away from the dense cityscape just steps east.
Camping is not available here — this is a thoroughly urban park designed for day use. But what it lacks in wilderness it more than makes up for in accessibility, sitting right off the 1 train at 145th Street.
Visit in late spring through early fall to catch outdoor programming and make the most of the riverside breezes. Winter brings its own appeal with indoor swimming and ice skating. Admission to the grounds is free, though individual facilities carry modest fees. For a park that technically sits on a roof, Riverbank delivers a remarkably full outdoor experience.
