Raccoon Creek State Park

Tucked into the rolling hills of Beaver County, Raccoon Creek State Park spans 7,572 acres of western Pennsylvania woodland, making it one of the largest state parks in the commonwealth. Established in 1945 on land once shaped by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the park preserves a remarkable stretch of Appalachian foothills where wildflower diversity rivals sites many times its size — the Wildflower Reserve alone protects over 700 species across its 314 acres, drawing botanists and casual hikers alike each spring.

Raccoon Lake anchors the park’s recreation, offering fishing for bass, bluegill, and catfish, plus a sandy beach for swimming during summer months. Kayakers and canoeists enjoy the calm water, while nearly 44 miles of trails wind through hemlock ravines, open meadows, and dense hardwood forest. Mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing extend the trail system across seasons.

The park’s modern campground provides a solid base for overnight stays, with both tent and RV sites available alongside organized group camping areas. Mineral springs scattered throughout the grounds hint at the area’s geological character and add an unexpected element to longer hikes.

Late April through May is prime time for the wildflower bloom, but autumn brings its own draw — the hardwood canopy puts on one of the best fall color displays in western Pennsylvania. Winter visitors find quiet trails and decent cross-country skiing when snow cooperates.
