Jefferson Lake State Park
Ohio (Jefferson County)
Tucked into the rolling hills of Jefferson County, Jefferson Lake State Park covers 962 acres of eastern Ohio countryside where wooded ridges meet a quiet 17-acre lake. The park sits in the foothills of the Appalachian Plateau, giving it a rugged, slightly wild character that sets it apart from Ohio’s flatter western parks.
The lake is the centerpiece. Anglers come for largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish, with a public boat launch accommodating electric motors only — keeping the water calm and the experience peaceful. A swimming beach opens in summer, and the surrounding shoreline trails make for easy afternoon walks with views across the water.
Hikers will find several miles of trails winding through mixed hardwood forest, with spring wildflowers and fall color making those seasons especially rewarding. The terrain is hilly enough to feel like a real hike without being strenuous. Birders should keep eyes open for warblers during spring migration — the dense canopy draws them through in good numbers.
Winter brings a different appeal: the hills are popular for sledding, and the quiet trails suit snowshoeing when conditions allow.
The park includes picnic shelters and open areas well-suited for family gatherings. For overnight visitors, check with Ohio DNR for current campsite availability and seasonal hours, as amenities can vary year to year.
Visit in mid-October for peak fall color across the hills, or come in late May when the forest floor is carpeted with trillium and the lake is still uncrowded.
