Hillman State Park
Pennsylvania (Washington County County)
Tucked into the rolling hills of Washington County in southwestern Pennsylvania, Hillman State Park offers 3,600 acres of rugged, undeveloped terrain that feels worlds away from the nearby Pittsburgh metro. This is a park for those who prefer their outdoor experiences on the wilder side — no manicured picnic pavilions or paved trails here, just honest-to-goodness woodland waiting to be explored.
The park’s landscape is defined by reclaimed mining land that nature has steadily reclaimed over decades, creating a patchwork of open meadows, young hardwood forests, and brushy thickets. This mix of habitats makes Hillman a standout destination for hunting, particularly during fall turkey and deer seasons, when the park draws experienced hunters from across the region. Bird watchers will find the transitional habitat equally rewarding, with grassland species thriving in the open areas.
Hiking here is informal — unmarked paths and old service roads wind through the property, rewarding self-sufficient explorers who don’t mind navigating without blazes. Mountain biking and horseback riding are also popular on these unpaved routes. In winter, the terrain lends itself well to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when conditions allow.
Camping information isn’t formally established, so check with the Pennsylvania DCNR for current access details before planning an overnight trip.
Spring and fall deliver the best conditions — mild temperatures, manageable undergrowth, and peak wildlife activity. Summer visits are fine but expect tall grasses and ticks in the meadow areas.
Hillman State Park rewards visitors who come prepared and appreciate nature on its own unpolished terms.
