Point Bridget State Park
Juneau, Alaska (Southeast Alaska parks County)
Point Bridget State Park lies along the rugged coastline north of Juneau, offering visitors a quintessential Southeast Alaska wilderness experience without venturing far from the capital city. This coastal gem combines temperate rainforest, alpine meadows, and pristine beaches where the land meets the waters of Lynn Canal.
The park’s trail system winds through towering Sitka spruce and western hemlock forests draped in moss, opening onto meadows that burst with wildflowers during summer months. The 3.5-mile Point Bridget Trail leads to a scenic point overlooking Berners Bay, where visitors frequently spot humpback whales, Steller sea lions, and harbor seals. During spring, the bay hosts one of Southeast Alaska’s most spectacular wildlife events—the eulachon run draws hundreds of sea lions and thousands of gulls to feast on the small fish.
Birdwatchers will find the park rewarding year-round, with bald eagles perched along the shoreline and varied thrushes calling from the forest understory. Black bears roam the area, so visitors should practice proper wildlife awareness.
The best time to visit runs from May through September when trails are accessible and wildlife activity peaks. However, the April-May eulachon run offers unmatched viewing opportunities for those willing to brave cooler temperatures.
Reaching the park requires a 39-mile drive north from Juneau on the scenic Glacier Highway. Come prepared for rapidly changing weather—layered clothing and rain gear are essentials in this temperate rainforest climate.
