Standing guard over Alaska’s Favorite Channel since 1904, Point Retreat Light marks the northern tip of Admiralty Island near Juneau. The lighthouse was built to guide vessels navigating the narrow waterway connecting Juneau to points north. Its square wooden tower, a classic early-20th-century Alaska design, remains an active aid to navigation maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. The light is not open to the public, and access requires a boat or floatplane. Summer months offer the best photography, with long golden-hour light and humpback whales often surfacing nearby. Admiralty Island — known as “Fortress of the Bears” — boasts one of North America’s densest brown bear populations, making it a wildlife destination in its own right.
