Nestled in the forested ridges of Cumberland County, Pine Grove Furnace State Park packs a remarkable amount of history and recreation into its 696 acres. Established in 1913, the park sits on the site of a former iron furnace operation that dates back to 1764, and remnants of that industrial past — including the original furnace stack and the Ironmaster’s Mansion — give the landscape a character you won’t find in newer parks.
The park is perhaps best known as the midpoint of the Appalachian Trail, making it a pilgrimage site for thru-hikers who celebrate by attempting the “Half-Gallon Challenge” — eating a half gallon of ice cream at the park store. Even if you’re not hiking all 2,190 miles, the AT passes directly through the park and offers accessible day hikes through hemlock-shaded hollows.
Two lakes anchor the park’s warm-weather activities. Laurel Lake and Fuller Lake both offer swimming beaches, fishing for bass and panfish, and non-motorized boating. In winter, the lakes and surrounding trails draw cross-country skiers and ice fishers when conditions allow.
Mountain biking trails wind through the surrounding Michaux State Forest, and hunters frequent the area during fall seasons. The park’s pine and hardwood forests put on a strong autumn color display, making late September through mid-October an especially rewarding time to visit.
Whether you’re chasing Appalachian Trail history, casting a line at dawn, or just looking for a quiet forest swim, Pine Grove Furnace delivers without the crowds of Pennsylvania’s larger parks.
