Perched atop South Mountain in Cumberland County, Kings Gap Environmental Education and Training Center is a 1,454-acre state park that doubles as Pennsylvania’s premier outdoor classroom. Established in 1973, the park occupies the former estate of James McCormick Cameron, whose iconic stone mansion still crowns the mountain and serves as the center’s headquarters.

What sets Kings Gap apart is its mission-driven design. Unlike typical state parks built purely for recreation, every trail and program here is rooted in environmental education. The park offers naturalist-led workshops on topics ranging from bird identification to forest ecology, making it ideal for families, school groups, and anyone curious about the natural world.

Sixteen miles of hiking trails wind through diverse habitats — oak-hickory forests, pine plantations, and rocky outcrops with sweeping views of the Cumberland Valley. The Watershed Trail and Kings Gap Hollow Trail are standouts, offering moderate terrain through old-growth sections. Birding is excellent, particularly during spring and fall migration when warblers move through the ridge corridor.

The best time to visit is mid-October, when South Mountain’s hardwood canopy delivers some of the most vivid fall color in south-central Pennsylvania. Spring wildflower season in April and May is equally rewarding. Expect a quieter, more contemplative park experience — Kings Gap draws learners, not crowds.
