Orman House Historic State Park
Apalachicola, Florida (Franklin County)
Orman House Historic State Park sits along the Apalachicola River in the heart of Florida’s Forgotten Coast, preserving one of the region’s finest antebellum homes. Built in 1838 by cotton merchant Thomas Orman, this Greek Revival house tells the story of Apalachicola’s brief but remarkable era as one of the Gulf Coast’s busiest cotton ports.
At just one acre, this is an intimate park — more historic site than wilderness destination. The restored Orman House anchors the experience, with guided tours revealing period furnishings, original heart-pine floors, and details of pre-Civil War commerce that once made Apalachicola Florida’s third-largest city. The adjacent Chapman Botanical Garden offers a quiet stroll through native and ornamental plantings, while interpretive panels connect the dots between the cotton trade, river commerce, and the town’s architectural heritage.
The park hosts seasonal living history events and holiday candlelight tours that bring the 1840s to life — check the Florida State Parks calendar before planning your visit. The annual Victorian Christmas celebration is particularly popular.
There’s no camping here, but Apalachicola offers plenty of lodging, and nearby St. George Island State Park provides excellent Gulf-side camping. The park pairs naturally with a day exploring Apalachicola’s walkable historic district, famous oyster houses, and working waterfront.
Best time to visit: October through April, when mild temperatures make walking the grounds comfortable and seasonal events are in full swing. Summer visits work fine but expect heat and humidity typical of the Panhandle coast. Rated 4.6/5 from 208 reviews.
