White Island State Historic Site
New Hampshire (Rockingham County)
Perched on the southernmost island of the Isles of Shoals, roughly six miles off the New Hampshire coast, White Island State Historic Site is home to one of New England’s most dramatic lighthouses. The White Island Light has guided mariners since 1821, and its current granite tower — built in 1859 — stands as a striking sentinel against the open Atlantic. At just five acres, this is one of New Hampshire’s smallest and most remarkable state sites.
Access to White Island is by boat only, with seasonal excursions departing from Portsmouth and Rye Harbor. The journey itself is part of the experience — watch for seals, seabirds, and the occasional whale as you cross the harbor. Once on the island, visitors can explore the restored lighthouse keeper’s quarters, walk the rocky shoreline, and take in panoramic ocean views that stretch to the Maine coast and beyond.
The island is a haven for birdwatchers, particularly during spring and fall migration when terns, herons, and other shorebirds pass through in impressive numbers. Photography opportunities are exceptional, especially at golden hour when the lighthouse glows against the sea.
There is no camping on White Island — visits are day trips only, and facilities are minimal. Bring water, sun protection, and sturdy footwear for the uneven terrain.
The best time to visit is June through September, when boat tours run regularly and weather is most cooperative. Plan ahead, as excursion seats fill quickly during peak summer weekends.
