Newtowne Neck State Park
Maryland (St. Mary's County)
Newtowne Neck State Park occupies a striking 794-acre peninsula in St. Mary’s County where Breton Bay meets the Potomac River. This is one of Maryland’s quieter gems — a place where colonial history, tidal wetlands, and farmland converge on a landscape that has changed remarkably little over the centuries.
The park sits on land deeply tied to early Maryland history. Jesuit missionaries established a presence here in the 1630s, and the historic St. Francis Xavier Church still stands adjacent to the property, one of the oldest Catholic parishes in the original thirteen colonies. Walking the trails here, you’re tracing paths that predate the nation itself.
Hiking and wildlife observation are the main draws. Several miles of trails wind through mixed hardwood forests, open meadows, and along shoreline bluffs with wide views across the Potomac. Birders will find the tidal marshes productive, especially during spring and fall migration when ospreys, bald eagles, and wading birds are common sights. Kayakers and paddlers can launch from the shoreline to explore the sheltered waters of Breton Bay.
The park is still developing its facilities, so come prepared with water and supplies. There are no established campgrounds at this time.
Fall is arguably the best season to visit — the crowds are thin, the foliage is vivid, and the cooler air makes trail hiking comfortable. Spring brings wildflowers and nesting birds. Summer can be hot and humid, but the water access helps.
Newtowne Neck rewards visitors who prefer solitude and history over amenities and crowds.
