Natural Bridge Battlefield Historic State Park preserves the site of one of the Civil War’s final engagements — the March 1865 Battle of Natural Bridge, where a makeshift Confederate force of old men, wounded soldiers, and teenage cadets from the West Florida Seminary turned back advancing Union troops. Their unlikely victory made Tallahassee the only Confederate state capital east of the Mississippi never captured during the war.

The park takes its name from the natural bridge itself, a striking geological feature where the St. Marks River disappears underground and re-emerges a short distance later. At 113 acres, this is a contemplative park rather than a sprawling recreation destination. Interpretive markers and a monument guide you through the battlefield’s history, and the short trails are easy walks suitable for all ages. Birdwatching along the river corridor is rewarding, particularly during spring and fall migration. The park hosts a well-attended annual reenactment each March near the battle’s anniversary — easily the best time to visit if you want to see the history brought to life.

There are no camping facilities on-site, but nearby St. Marks River Preserve State Park and Apalachicola National Forest offer options within a short drive.
