Mille Lacs Kathio State Park
Minnesota (Mille Lacs County)
Mille Lacs Kathio State Park sits along the southwestern shore of Mille Lacs Lake in central Minnesota, protecting nearly 10,000 acres where the Rum River flows out of the state’s second-largest lake. This is one of Minnesota’s most historically significant landscapes — the park contains archaeological sites spanning over 9,000 years of human habitation, earning it National Historic Landmark status. The Mdewakanton Dakota and Ojibwe peoples shaped this land long before European arrival, and interpretive programs bring that deep history to life.
The park’s terrain rolls through hardwood forests, marshlands, and glacial ridges, with a 100-foot observation tower on a drumlin offering panoramic views of the lake and surrounding woodlands. Over 35 miles of trails wind through the park — hiking in summer, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. The Rum River provides excellent canoeing, and anglers find walleye, northern pike, and bass in both the river and lake. Birding is particularly rewarding during spring and fall migrations along the Mississippi Flyway corridor.
Campgrounds include drive-in sites, a horse camp, and a year-round camper cabin for those who prefer a roof overhead. Fall is arguably the best season to visit, when the hardwood canopy turns brilliant and summer crowds thin out, though winter transforms the park into a quiet Nordic skiing destination.
Mille Lacs Kathio rewards visitors who slow down — paddle the river at dusk, climb the tower at sunrise, and let 9,000 years of history sink in.
