Father Hennepin State Park

Tucked along the southern shore of Lake Mille Lacs — Minnesota’s second-largest lake — Father Hennepin State Park packs a surprising amount of beauty into its 275 acres. Named for the 17th-century Belgian explorer Louis Hennepin, the park offers one of the best lake access points in the state, with a sandy swimming beach that draws families all summer long.

The real draw here is the water. Lake Mille Lacs is legendary for walleye fishing, and the park puts you right on the shoreline with easy boat launch access. Anglers come year-round — ice fishing on Mille Lacs is a Minnesota institution, with entire villages of fish houses appearing each winter. Beyond fishing, the park’s trail system winds through hardwood forest and along the lakeshore, offering roughly six miles of hiking in summer and groomed cross-country ski trails in winter.

Birdwatchers will appreciate the mix of woodland and shoreline habitat. Keep an eye out for bald eagles, osprey, and a variety of warblers during spring migration. The sunsets over Mille Lacs from the beach are worth the trip alone — the lake is wide enough that the sky opens up in every direction.

The park sits along Highway 27, about two hours northwest of the Twin Cities, making it an easy weekend getaway. Summer weekends are the busiest, but fall color season in late September brings quieter crowds and stunning hardwood foliage reflected off the lake’s surface. Spring and early summer offer the best birding and wildflower displays.
