McGrath State Beach

Tucked between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Clara River in Ventura County, McGrath State Beach spans 314 acres of coastal dunes, wetlands, and sandy shoreline that feel remarkably untouched for Southern California. The two-mile stretch of beach is wide and uncrowded compared to neighboring Ventura and Oxnard shores, making it a favorite for beachcombing, surf fishing, and long walks without dodging umbrellas. Surfing picks up during winter swells, and the calmer summer months are ideal for swimming and kayaking near the river mouth. The nature trail winding through the dunes and along the estuary is an easy, flat walk that rewards patient visitors with wildlife sightings — bring binoculars.

McGrath’s campground sits close enough to hear the waves, with sites accommodating tents and smaller RVs among low coastal scrub. Summer weekends fill fast, so reservations well in advance are essential. Spring and early fall strike the best balance — fewer crowds, mild temperatures in the mid-60s to low 70s, and active bird migration.
