Standing guard over Port Hueneme, California since 1874, Point Hueneme Light is one of the oldest lighthouses on the Southern California coast. The squat, square tower was built to guide vessels into the only deep-water port between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Still an active aid to navigation, the lighthouse is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard and is not open to the public for climbing or interior tours. Visitors can view and photograph it from the nearby beach; golden hour before sunset offers the best light, with the Channel Islands as a backdrop.
