McCormick’s Creek State Park holds a distinction few Indiana parks can claim — it was the state’s very first state park, established in 1916. Nestled in Washington Township in Owen County, this 1,924-acre park has drawn visitors for over a century, and the reason is immediately obvious once you step onto its trails.

The park’s centerpiece is McCormick’s Creek itself, a limestone creek that has carved a dramatic canyon through the bedrock over millennia. The canyon trail leads to a waterfall that’s especially impressive after spring rains, when water rushes over the moss-covered rock face. Beyond the creek, the park’s trail system winds through dense hardwood forest, past sinkholes, caves, and exposed limestone formations that make this corner of southern Indiana feel almost Appalachian.

Hikers can explore Trail 3 to reach the canyon floor, or take Trail 5 through old-growth woods to Wolf Cave, a collapsed limestone cavern worth the detour. Birdwatching is excellent here — warblers and woodpeckers are common in the canopy. The park also offers swimming in a seasonal pool, tennis courts, and a nature center with programming for families.

Spring is the best time to visit, when wildflowers carpet the forest floor and the waterfall runs at full force. Fall brings stunning foliage across the hardwood canopy. Summer weekends get crowded, so midweek visits offer a quieter experience.
