Lake Taghkanic State Park
New York (Taconic County)
Tucked into the rolling hills of Taconic County, Lake Taghkanic State Park has been drawing visitors to its wooded shores since 1929. At 1,569 acres, the park centers on its namesake lake—a calm, spring-fed body of water that offers some of the best freshwater swimming in the Hudson Valley region.
Two sandy beaches anchor the summer experience here, with designated swimming areas that stay shallow enough for families with young children. Beyond the waterline, the lake is popular for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing for largemouth bass and panfish. Boat rentals are typically available on-site, so there’s no need to haul your own gear.
On land, a network of trails winds through hardwood forests and open meadows, offering easy-to-moderate hiking that suits most fitness levels. Birders will appreciate the diversity of songbirds in the mature tree canopy, and the park’s relatively low profile compared to nearby Catskill destinations means the trails rarely feel crowded.
The park offers tent and trailer campsites as well as rustic cabins and cottages for those who prefer a roof overhead. Sites fill quickly during peak summer weekends, so booking early is strongly recommended.
Late spring through early fall is the prime window, with July and August being the busiest months. Autumn brings quieter trails and exceptional foliage along the Taconic ridge. Winter visitors will find cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when conditions allow.
Lake Taghkanic rewards those looking for a genuine, unpretentious outdoor experience without a long drive from the New York metro area.
