Mount Everett State Reservation
Massachusetts (Berkshire County)
Rising to 2,602 feet in the southern Taconic Range, Mount Everett State Reservation sprawls across nearly 2,500 acres of Berkshire County wilderness — one of the largest protected parcels in southwestern Massachusetts. The summit offers some of the most dramatic panoramic views in the state, stretching across the Housatonic Valley and into Connecticut and New York on clear days.
The reservation’s crown jewel is Guilder Pond, a high-elevation bog pond near the summit ringed by old-growth red spruce and pitch pine — a relic ecosystem more typical of northern Maine than southern New England. In late June, the surrounding slopes burst with mountain laurel blooms, drawing hikers from across the region for what many consider the finest wildflower display in the Berkshires.
A section of the Appalachian Trail traverses the reservation, making it a popular stop for thru-hikers and day-trippers alike. The summit trail from the parking area on East Street is a moderately strenuous 2-mile climb with rocky footing — sturdy boots are a must. For a longer outing, connect to Race Brook Falls, a spectacular series of cascades tumbling down the eastern escarpment.
Late May through October offers the best conditions, with fall foliage in early October rivaling anything in Vermont. Winter access is limited, as the summit road closes seasonally.
This is rugged, relatively uncrowded hiking terrain — not a manicured picnic park. Come prepared with water, layers, and a trail map, and you’ll be rewarded with some of the finest high-country scenery Massachusetts has to offer.
