L. L. “Stub” Stewart State Park

Tucked into the forested foothills of the northern Oregon Coast Range, L. L. “Stub” Stewart State Park offers a surprisingly wild escape just 30 miles northwest of Portland. Opened in 2007, this 1,654-acre park fills a gap that outdoor lovers in the metro area had long felt — a full-service campground with real backcountry character, close enough for a weeknight getaway.

The park’s trail network is the main draw. Over 25 miles of paths wind through second-growth Douglas fir and red alder, serving hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians on separate, well-marked routes. The Hilltop Day Use Area rewards a short climb with sweeping views of the Coast Range, and on clear days you can spot the tops of Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier to the north.

Camping options here are unusually varied. Choose from traditional tent sites, full-hookup RV spots, walk-in primitive sites, rustic cabins, or even a horse camp with corrals. The cabins book fast in summer, so reserve early. A disc golf course threads through the trees and has become a regional favorite.

Spring and early summer bring wildflowers and mild temperatures ideal for trail riding and hiking. Fall delivers golden big-leaf maples against dark conifers. Winter stays mild enough for year-round camping, though trails can get muddy.

Stub Stewart works equally well as a quick overnight from Portland or a base camp for exploring the Banks-Vernonia State Trail, which passes right through the park’s eastern edge.
