Tucked into the rolling hills of Vinton County, Lake Hope State Park sprawls across 3,103 acres of some of Ohio’s most rugged and heavily forested terrain. The park sits within the Zaleski State Forest, making it one of the most remote and naturally immersive destinations in the state — a place where the Appalachian foothills feel genuinely wild.

The centerpiece is 120-acre Lake Hope, a quiet body of water ideal for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. Anglers will find bass, bluegill, and catfish, while paddlers can explore the lake’s wooded coves without competing against motorboats — only electric motors are permitted. Swimming is available at a designated beach during summer months.

Hikers have access to miles of trails winding through deep ravines and second-growth forest, with options ranging from easy lakeside strolls to more challenging ridge routes. The park’s location within one of Ohio’s least-developed counties means wildlife sightings are common — white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and pileated woodpeckers are regulars.

The historic dining lodge, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, serves meals overlooking the lake and remains one of the park’s most distinctive features. Cabins and campgrounds offer overnight options for visitors who want to extend their stay.

Fall is the standout season here. The surrounding hardwood forest puts on one of southern Ohio’s best color displays, and the cooler temperatures make hiking especially rewarding. Spring wildflower season runs a close second.
