Delaware State Park sits at the heart of Delaware County, Ohio, where over 3,000 acres of rolling terrain and Delaware Lake create a natural retreat just north of Columbus. The park’s centerpiece is the 1,330-acre reservoir, built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the Olentangy River, which draws anglers chasing saugeye, crappie, and channel catfish year-round.

The lake defines the experience here. A public swimming beach opens each summer, and two boat ramps provide easy access for motorboats, pontoons, and kayaks alike. Sailors particularly favor Delaware Lake for its reliable afternoon winds and open water. On shore, nearly 20 miles of multi-use trails wind through oak-hickory woodlands and open meadows — ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding depending on the section.

Hunters will find designated areas for deer, turkey, and small game during Ohio’s regulated seasons, making this one of the more versatile state parks in the central part of the state. Birders should watch for great blue herons, osprey, and migrating waterfowl along the marshy northern inlets.

The campground offers over 200 sites, including electric hookups, and stays busy from Memorial Day through Labor Day — reservations are strongly recommended for summer weekends. A handful of rent-a-camps and cabins provide options for those who prefer a roof overhead.

Visit in early fall for smaller crowds, reliable weather, and excellent fishing. Spring wildflower displays along the wooded trails are worth the trip alone.
