Codorus State Park
Pennsylvania (York County County)
Codorus State Park sits on 3,329 acres in York County, Pennsylvania, built around the 1,275-acre Lake Marburg — one of the largest lakes in the state park system. Established in 1966, the park has become a destination for boaters, anglers, and families looking for a full day on the water without fighting crowds.
Lake Marburg is the main draw. Its 26 miles of shoreline support motorboating, sailing, kayaking, and canoeing, with multiple boat launch areas spread around the lake. Anglers target largemouth bass, walleye, northern pike, and panfish throughout the season. In winter, ice fishing draws a dedicated following when conditions allow.
Beyond the water, the park offers over 20 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The trails wind through mixed hardwood forests and open meadows, with several routes offering views back across the lake. A swimming pool complex operates during summer months — the park uses a pool rather than a lake beach.
Birders should note that Codorus hosts a thriving population of nesting great blue herons, and the lake’s coves attract migrating waterfowl in spring and fall. The park also maintains picnic areas, playgrounds, and disc golf facilities.
Spring and fall deliver the best conditions — mild temperatures, fewer visitors, and excellent fishing. Summer weekends get busy around the boat launches, so arrive early. Winter is quieter but rewarding for cross-country skiing and ice fishing when the lake cooperates.
