Brimley State Park sits on the southern shore of Whitefish Bay along Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, offering one of the most accessible stretches of Great Lakes shoreline in Chippewa County. At 100 acres, it’s compact but purposeful — nearly every site and trail puts you within earshot of waves rolling onto a mile-long sandy beach.

The park’s main draw is that beach. Unlike much of Superior’s rocky coastline, Brimley’s shoreline is wide, sandy, and gradual enough for wading, though the water stays bracingly cold well into July. Sunsets here face northwest across open water, and on clear evenings the sky turns the bay into a mirror of orange and violet.

Beyond the beach, the park offers hiking through mixed hardwood and conifer forest, fishing for walleye and whitefish in the bay, and birding along the shoreline — spring and fall migrations bring warblers and shorebirds through in impressive numbers. In winter, the area transforms into a hub for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing, with trail systems connecting to the broader UP network.

The campground provides a solid base with sites tucked among the trees, many within a short walk of the water. It fills quickly during peak summer weekends, so reservations are worth making early.

Visit in late June through August for the warmest swimming conditions, or come in September when the crowds thin and fall color begins creeping through the hardwoods. Brimley is a quiet, unhurried park — exactly the kind of place the Upper Peninsula does best.
