Bond Falls Scenic Site is one of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula’s most breathtaking waterfalls, tucked into the forests of Ontonagon County across 90 acres of preserved wilderness. The centerpiece is Bond Falls itself — a wide, cascading waterfall that drops roughly 50 feet over a series of layered rock ledges, spreading the Ontonagon River’s middle branch into dozens of ribbons of whitewater.

What sets Bond Falls apart from other UP waterfalls is accessibility. A well-maintained boardwalk and staircase system winds along the base and sides of the falls, offering multiple vantage points without a strenuous hike. You can spend 30 minutes or two hours exploring different angles — each turn reveals a new composition of rushing water, dark rock, and surrounding hardwoods.

Autumn is the prime season here. When the maples and birches turn in late September through mid-October, the contrast of gold and crimson foliage against the white cascades is genuinely stunning and draws photographers from across the Midwest. Summer visits are equally rewarding, with full water flow and warm temperatures for exploring. Spring snowmelt brings the most dramatic volume, though trails can be muddy.

The site is a day-use area — there’s no camping on-site, but nearby Bond Falls Flowage offers fishing and paddling, and several campgrounds dot the surrounding Ottawa National Forest. Picnic areas and restrooms are available at the trailhead parking lot.

Bond Falls works well as a standalone stop or as part of a broader UP waterfall tour. Budget at least an hour to take it all in properly.
