Agate Falls Scenic Site

Tucked into the western Upper Peninsula in Ontonagon County, Agate Falls Scenic Site protects 213 acres of rugged Michigan wilderness centered around one of the U.P.’s most photogenic waterfalls. The Middle Branch of the Ontonagon River drops roughly 40 feet over a series of layered rock ledges here, creating a broad, powerful cascade that rewards every visit — whether spring snowmelt is thundering through or autumn has painted the surrounding hardwoods in copper and gold.

A short, well-maintained trail leads from the parking area to a dedicated viewing platform overlooking the falls. The walk is under half a mile and manageable for most visitors, though the path includes some uneven terrain and a staircase near the overlook. Along the way, the trail crosses an old railroad bridge that offers its own scenic views of the river corridor below.

Beyond the falls, the site’s mixed forest of hemlock, birch, and maple makes for pleasant woodland walking. Birdwatchers will find warblers and woodpeckers active in the canopy during summer months. The park is a day-use site — there are no campgrounds on the property, but nearby options in the Ottawa National Forest and Bond Falls area provide plenty of places to set up camp.

The best time to visit is late May through early June, when water volume peaks, or mid-October for peak fall color. The site is typically accessible from May through November. Arrive early on weekends to secure parking, as the small lot fills quickly during leaf season.
