Blazing Star State Trail winds through the gentle prairie landscape of southern Minnesota, connecting the city of Albert Lea to Myre-Big Island State Park. Named after the native blazing star wildflower that dots the surrounding grasslands each summer, this paved trail follows a former railroad corridor through some of Freeborn County’s most scenic terrain.

The trail stretches approximately six miles, offering a smooth, accessible surface ideal for biking, walking, running, and inline skating. In winter, the corridor welcomes cross-country skiers and snowshoers. The relatively flat grade makes it welcoming for families and casual riders, while the distance provides a satisfying outing for more experienced trail users.

What sets Blazing Star apart is its connection to the broader landscape. The trail passes through restored prairie sections where wildflowers bloom from late June through September — the blazing star itself puts on its best show in July and August, painting the trailside in vibrant purple. Birders will find plenty to watch, as the prairie edges attract meadowlarks, bobolinks, and red-tailed hawks.

At the trail’s eastern end, Myre-Big Island State Park offers camping, swimming at Albert Lea Lake, and additional hiking trails through oak savanna and wetland habitats — making it easy to turn a day ride into a weekend trip.

The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when the prairie is alive with color and the trail conditions are at their peak. Expect a peaceful, uncrowded experience with wide-open skies.
