Pilot Knob State Park
Forest City, Iowa (Hancock County County)
About This Park
Pilot Knob trailhead is located on Forest Service Road 208. Traveling north, it provides motorized access to the Centennial Trail and traveling south it provides non-motorized access to the Centennial Trail. There is a restroom here but no water.
Pilot Knob State Park sits just outside Forest City in Hancock County, Iowa, covering 528 acres of rolling terrain shaped by ancient glaciers. The park’s centerpiece is Pilot Knob, one of the highest points in north-central Iowa, where a stone observation tower rewards hikers with sweeping views of the surrounding prairie and woodlands. This glacial landscape — part of the Altamont Moraine — gives the park a character unlike most of Iowa, with rugged hills, kettleholes, and Dead Man’s Lake, a rare fen nestled into the terrain below.
Trails wind through oak and basswood forests, open prairies, and along the edges of wetland areas, making this a strong spot for birdwatching and wildflower scouting, especially in late spring and early summer. The 4.6-star rating from 375 reviewers reflects the park’s quiet appeal — it draws visitors who appreciate solitude and natural diversity over crowds and amenities.
The park offers a campground with both electric and non-electric sites, along with a rustic cabin option. Facilities are well-maintained but modest, so come prepared for a more traditional outdoor experience. A small picnic area and shelter house round out the basics.
Fall is arguably the best time to visit, when the hardwood forest erupts in color and the observation tower views are at their peak. Summer brings lush green trails and full campground availability. Winter visitors will find excellent cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when conditions allow.
Pilot Knob rewards those willing to slow down and explore Iowa’s glacial heritage up close.
