Big Stone Lake State Park sits along the shores of Big Stone Lake in western Minnesota’s Big Stone County, where the prairie meets the water in one of the state’s most underappreciated landscapes. Spanning 980 acres, the park occupies the southern end of Big Stone Lake — Minnesota’s second-largest lake on the western border, which also marks the headwaters of the Minnesota River.

The terrain here is distinctly different from the forests and lakes of northern Minnesota. Rolling tallgrass prairie gives way to granite outcrops and wooded ravines that slope down to the lake’s edge. Birders come for the western species rarely seen elsewhere in the state — western grebes, white pelicans, and migrating waterfowl that gather along the Central Flyway each spring and fall.

Fishing is a major draw, with walleye, northern pike, and bass thriving in Big Stone Lake’s waters. A public boat launch provides easy access, and the lake’s size means you won’t feel crowded even on busy summer weekends. Hiking trails wind through prairie and hardwood forest, offering wildflower displays from May through September.

The park’s campground provides both drive-in and walk-in sites, many with views of the lake. Summer weekends fill up, but midweek visits in June through August offer the best combination of warm weather and open sites. Fall brings quieter days, golden prairie grasses, and excellent birding during migration season.
