Hartford Beach State Park

Tucked along the southwestern shore of Big Stone Lake in Roberts County, Hartford Beach State Park offers 331 acres where the glacially carved Coteau des Prairies meets open water. The park sits at the South Dakota–Minnesota border, giving visitors sweeping views across the lake to the bluffs on the Minnesota side — a landscape shaped by ancient glacial activity that left behind dramatic ravines and exposed quartzite outcroppings throughout the park.

Big Stone Lake is the main draw. The sandy beach is one of the better swimming spots in northeastern South Dakota, and the lake supports walleye, bass, and northern pike fishing. A public boat ramp provides easy access for anglers and recreational boaters. On land, several miles of trails wind through native prairie and wooded ravines, where white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and a variety of songbirds are common sights.

The campground includes both modern and basic sites, with electrical hookups available at select spots. A sheltered picnic area near the beach makes day visits comfortable, and the park’s relatively quiet reputation means campsites are easier to secure here than at busier destinations in the Black Hills.

Summer is the prime season — lake water warms enough for swimming by mid-June, and fishing holds strong through September. Spring and fall bring excellent birding along the Central Flyway migration corridor.
