Belle Isle Marsh Reservation

Tucked between East Boston and Revere, Belle Isle Marsh Reservation protects 188 acres of the last remaining salt marsh in Boston — a surprisingly wild pocket of coastline just minutes from Logan Airport. The contrast is part of its charm: jets arc overhead while great blue herons stalk the tidal channels below.

The marsh is a critical stopover on the Atlantic Flyway, making it one of the best birding spots in metropolitan Boston. Spring and fall migration bring warblers, shorebirds, and raptors through in impressive numbers, while snowy egrets and osprey are summer regulars. Even casual visitors will spot something worth watching. Bring binoculars.

A network of flat, accessible trails loops through upland meadows and along the marsh edge, with boardwalks extending over the wetlands for closer views. The paths are easy and family-friendly — nothing strenuous, but the scenery rewards a slow pace. Interpretive signage helps identify the grasses, birds, and tidal patterns that shape this ecosystem.

The reservation is a day-use area with no camping facilities. Kayakers can launch into the marsh channels at high tide for a quiet paddle through the cordgrass, though timing the tides matters here.

Late spring through early fall offers the best conditions, with peak birding during May and September migrations. Winter visits have their own appeal — the stark marsh landscape and occasional snowy owl sighting draw hardy birders year-round.
