Nahant Beach Reservation

Stretching along a narrow causeway that connects the town of Nahant to the mainland, Nahant Beach Reservation offers one of the most dramatic coastal settings in Greater Boston. This 67-acre state park in Essex County features a long, crescent-shaped beach flanked by the Atlantic on both sides of the Lynn-Nahant causeway — a geography that gives visitors the rare experience of ocean views in nearly every direction.

The beach itself runs roughly a half-mile along Nahant Bay, with calm, shallow waters that make it a favorite for families with young children. Swimming is the main draw during summer months, supported by lifeguards and a well-maintained bathhouse with changing facilities and restrooms. Beyond the sand, visitors come for surfcasting, jogging the paved causeway path, and picnicking at tables scattered along the grassy median.

Birders appreciate the reservation’s position on a migratory flyway — shorebirds and seabirds pass through reliably in spring and fall, and the rocky outcrops at the Nahant end attract purple sandpipers in winter. The sunrises here, viewed across open water, are genuinely spectacular.

Summer weekends fill the parking lot early, so arriving before 10 a.m. is wise from late June through August. Shoulder season visits in September and early October bring fewer crowds, warm-enough water, and golden light. There is no camping at Nahant Beach Reservation.

Just 12 miles north of downtown Boston, this is coastal New England at its most accessible — no long drive required.
