Whitefish Point Light

Standing guard over Lake Superior’s notorious “Shipwreck Coast” since 1848, Whitefish Point Light is Michigan’s oldest active lighthouse. Located in Whitefish Township, Chippewa County, the current skeletal iron tower — erected in 1861 — replaced the original stone structure and has guided mariners through some of the Great Lakes’ most treacherous waters ever since. The light marks the entrance to Whitefish Bay, where the Edmund Fitzgerald famously sank in 1975. The tower is not open to public climbing, but the surrounding grounds and adjacent Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum make the trip worthwhile. Golden hour and autumn storms create dramatic photography conditions. Nearby, Whitefish Point Bird Observatory offers excellent birding during spring and fall migrations.
