Standing in the Chesapeake Bay off Virginia’s Eastern Shore, Watts Island Light was first established in 1833 to guide mariners through these busy waters. The original structure has endured decades of storms and erosion that have slowly consumed much of Watts Island itself, making the lighthouse one of the bay’s most dramatic survivors.

No longer an active navigational aid, the light is not open to the public and cannot be climbed. It is best viewed by boat, with golden-hour light at sunrise or sunset offering the most striking photography conditions, particularly in autumn when skies are clearest.
