Built in 1889, the Great Wicomico River Light guided mariners navigating the confluence of the Great Wicomico River and the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia’s Northern Neck region. This screwpile lighthouse stood on iron legs driven into the river bottom, a common design for the Bay’s soft sediments. Now decommissioned, the light is no longer active and is not open to the public.

Visitors can view the structure by boat, making it a popular stop for kayakers and charter cruises. Golden hour provides the best photography, with the lighthouse silhouetted against the Bay.
