Rising from the waters of Kedges Strait in the Chesapeake Bay near Princess Anne, Maryland, Solomons Lump Light has guided mariners since 1875. This screwpile lighthouse was rebuilt on a concrete caisson foundation in 1895 after ice damage, giving it the distinctive square dwelling-on-platform appearance it retains today. Still an active navigational aid maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard, the lighthouse is not open to the public and can only be viewed by boat. Golden hour and sunset offer the best photography conditions, with the light framed against open water. Nearby, visitors can explore Deal Island, the Chesapeake Bay heritage towns of Crisfield and Smith Island, and the wildlife refuges of Maryland’s lower Eastern Shore.
