Rock Harbor Light

Perched on the rugged shores of Isle Royale in Lake Superior, Rock Harbor Light has guided mariners since 1855. Built to aid copper mining vessels navigating the island’s treacherous waters, the lighthouse was deactivated in 1859 before being relit in 1874 and eventually automated. Its stone tower and attached keeper’s dwelling remain remarkably well-preserved, offering a glimpse into Great Lakes maritime heritage.

The lighthouse is not open to the public for climbing, though visitors can view it from nearby trails and the harbor. Dawn and dusk provide the best photography light, with the tower silhouetted against Lake Superior’s vast horizon.
