Cedar Breaks Scenic Byway
Utah
Rising through the high plateaus of southern Utah, the Cedar Breaks Scenic Byway delivers travelers to one of the state’s most spectacular yet overlooked natural amphitheaters. The route climbs through fragrant forests of spruce, fir, and aspen before revealing Cedar Breaks National Monument — a half-mile-deep geological bowl ablaze with red, orange, and violet hoodoos carved over millions of years.
Along the way, sweeping meadows burst with wildflowers in summer, while autumn transforms the mountainsides into a mosaic of gold and crimson. Pullouts offer expansive views across the Markagunt Plateau, and at over 10,000 feet in elevation, the air is crisp and the skies remarkably clear — making this a prime stargazing destination.
Key stops include the Cedar Breaks visitor center, Point Supreme overlook, and several trailheads leading to alpine lakes and bristlecone pine groves among the oldest living organisms on Earth. The charming mountain town of Brian Head provides lodging, dining, and year-round recreation.
The best time to drive is June through October, as heavy snow closes the highest sections in winter. Allow one to two hours for the drive itself, with extra time for hikes and photography at overlooks along the way.
