North Fork Virgin River Wilderness Study Area
Utah
North Fork Virgin River Wilderness Study Area serves as the gateway to one of the Southwest’s most iconic canyon hikes. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this Utah backcountry area offers dramatic slot canyon scenery that rivals neighboring Zion National Park—because hikers entering the famous Virgin River Narrows trail pass through here first.
The terrain features towering sandstone walls, riparian corridors, and the cold, clear waters of the North Fork Virgin River. Wildlife sightings include mule deer, elk, and mountain lion, while bald eagles and peregrine falcons patrol the canyon rims. The area supports numerous sensitive plant and animal species.
Dispersed camping is permitted on BLM land outside designated wilderness boundaries, allowing self-sufficient visitors to establish primitive campsites. No developed facilities exist within the WSA itself—pack everything in and out.
Access requires careful planning, as river conditions vary seasonally. Spring runoff creates dangerous water levels, while late summer through fall typically offers the most manageable hiking conditions. Check flash flood forecasts before entering any slot canyon. A high-clearance vehicle may be necessary for some access roads.
