Pictograph Cave State Park sits just south of Billings in Yellowstone County, Montana, protecting one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Northern Plains. Across its 93 acres, three sandstone caves — Pictograph Cave, Ghost Cave, and Middle Cave — hold over 100 prehistoric rock paintings, some dating back more than 2,000 years. The pictographs depict animals, warriors, and ceremonial figures, offering a rare window into the lives of the peoples who sheltered here long before European contact.

A paved, half-mile interpretive trail leads visitors from the parking area to viewing platforms at each cave. Wayside exhibits explain the history of the paintings, the archaeological excavations that uncovered thousands of artifacts, and the geology that carved these shelters into the rimrock. The trail is accessible for most fitness levels, though the final stretch to Pictograph Cave involves a moderate uphill climb.

This is a day-use park — there’s no camping on-site, but Billings offers plenty of lodging and several campgrounds sit within a short drive. Plan about one to two hours for a visit. Spring through early fall is the best window, as the park typically closes or limits access during winter months. Late morning light illuminates the cave walls well for viewing and photography.
