Lake Elmo State Park

Tucked into the rimrock landscape just outside Billings, Lake Elmo State Park offers 183 acres of unexpected oasis in Yellowstone County. The centerpiece is a 64-acre reservoir ringed by gentle trails, where the Beartooth Mountains frame the horizon to the southwest — a reminder of the wilder country just beyond the city limits.

The park punches above its weight for a small state park. Swimming is the main draw in summer, with a designated beach area that fills up on hot July afternoons when Billings temperatures push into the 90s. A 2.5-mile loop trail circles the reservoir, popular with joggers, dog walkers, and families with strollers — flat enough for anyone but scenic enough to feel like a real escape.

Winter brings a different character entirely. The frozen lake draws ice fishers, and the surrounding trails see steady cross-country skiing and snowshoeing traffic when conditions cooperate.

Lake Elmo works best as a day-use destination rather than a basecamp. There are no overnight camping facilities, so visitors looking to stay longer should check nearby options in the Billings area or head south toward the Beartooths.

The sweet spot for visiting is June through September, when the water is warm enough for swimming and the long Montana evenings stretch past 9 PM. Arrive early on weekends — parking fills fast.
