Scott Joplin House State Historic Site preserves the St. Louis apartment where the “King of Ragtime” lived from 1900 to 1903 and composed some of his most celebrated works, including The Entertainer. This modest second-floor flat is the only surviving residence of Scott Joplin and offers a rare, intimate look at the life of one of America’s most influential composers.

The restored apartment recreates the turn-of-the-century living conditions Joplin would have known, complete with period furnishings and a piano like the one where he refined the syncopated rhythms that would shape American music. Downstairs, interpretive exhibits trace Joplin’s journey from Texas to Sedalia to St. Louis, exploring how the city’s vibrant African American community fueled the ragtime movement. At just under four acres, this is a compact site focused on the house itself rather than outdoor exploration. Visitors typically spend 45 minutes to an hour touring the exhibits and apartment. There is no camping on-site.
