Minneopa State Park sits along the Minnesota River in Blue Earth County, anchored by two standout features: a stunning double waterfall and one of Minnesota’s few free-roaming bison herds. At 1,617 acres, the park packs a surprising amount of variety into a manageable size.

Minneopa Falls is the main draw — a two-tiered cascade that drops through layered sandstone and limestone into a narrow gorge. Spring snowmelt turns it into a thundering spectacle, while late summer reveals the exposed rock formations in full detail. A short trail leads from the parking area to viewing platforms above and below the falls, making it accessible for most visitors.

The park’s bison range occupies the western section, where a small herd of roughly 30 animals grazes across restored tallgrass prairie. A paved drive loops through the range, offering close views from your vehicle. Early morning visits give you the best chance of spotting them near the road.

Beyond the headliners, Minneopa offers several miles of hiking trails through prairie, oak savanna, and river bottomland. Seppmann Mill, a wind-driven stone gristmill built by German settlers in the 1860s, stands as a quiet piece of frontier history along one of the paths.

The campground includes both drive-in and walk-in sites, with a mix of electric and non-electric options — reservations are recommended for summer weekends.

Visit in late April through May for peak waterfall flow, or September for golden prairie grasses and thinner crowds. Either way, Minneopa delivers more than its modest size suggests.
