Lake Vermilion Soudan Underground Mine State Park offers one of Minnesota’s most unusual combinations: a pristine northern lake landscape paired with a journey 2,341 feet underground into the historic Soudan Iron Mine. Spanning 2,875 acres in St. Louis County, this park sits where the Iron Range meets the Boundary Waters region, delivering both industrial history and wild beauty in a single visit.
The underground mine tour is the headline experience. Visitors descend in a cage elevator into Minnesota’s oldest and deepest iron mine, where temperatures hold steady around 50°F year-round — bring a jacket even in July. Down below, you’ll walk through drift tunnels and learn how miners extracted hematite ore from the 1880s through 1962. A separate physics lab tour showcases the underground research facility that once hunted for dark matter.
Above ground, Lake Vermilion’s 40,000 acres of clear water and 365 islands anchor the park’s outdoor offerings. Fishing for walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass draws anglers from across the Midwest. Hiking trails wind through boreal forest of birch, aspen, and pine, with overlooks above the lake. Paddlers can explore quiet bays and island shorelines directly from the park.
Visit between late May and early October for the best combination of mine tour availability and warm-weather activities. Summer weekends are busiest — weekday visits mean shorter tour wait times and quieter trails.
Whether you’re drawn by geology, history, or lakeside solitude, this park delivers something genuinely different from Minnesota’s other state parks.
