Down below, you’ll walk through drift tunnels and learn how miners extracted hematite ore from the 1880s through 1962. A separate physics lab tour showcases the underground research facility that once hunted for dark matter.

Above ground, Lake Vermilion’s 40,000 acres of clear water and 365 islands anchor the park’s outdoor offerings. Fishing for walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass draws anglers from across the Midwest. Hiking trails wind through boreal forest of birch, aspen, and pine, with overlooks above the lake. Paddlers can explore quiet bays and island shorelines directly from the park.
